Collecting Weather Data Through Daily Weather Detective Game
Grade 1 · Science · 45 minutes
Objective
Students will observe and record daily weather patterns using simple measurement tools and descriptive vocabulary.
Materials
- Chart paper
- Markers
- Simple thermometer
- Wind sock or ribbon
- Weather observation sheets
- Stickers
Hook
Tell students they are weather detectives who must solve the mystery of what the weather will be like each day. Show them the detective badge stickers they'll earn for accurate observations.
Main Activity
Teams of 3-4 students rotate through weather stations set up around the classroom and outdoor area. At each station, teams collect clues about today's weather: temperature reading, cloud observations, wind direction using ribbon, and precipitation check. Teams record their findings on observation sheets using pictures and simple words. After collecting all clues, teams present their weather reports to earn detective badges. The class creates a large weather chart to track patterns over the week, with each team adding their daily observations.
Discussion Questions
- What clues helped you figure out today's weather?
- How do you think tomorrow's weather might be different from today?
- Which weather station gave you the most surprising information?
- What patterns do you notice when we look at our weather data from this week?
- How could knowing about weather patterns help people plan their day?
Exit Ticket
Draw a picture of today's weather and write one word that describes it. Circle whether you think tomorrow will be the same or different.
Differentiation
Support: Provide picture cards showing different weather conditions and pre-drawn observation sheets with symbols to circle rather than requiring writing.
Extension: Challenge students to predict tomorrow's weather based on patterns they observe and create their own weather measurement tool using classroom materials.
