Comparing Daily Life Then and Now Through Picture Sorting
Grade 2 · History · 45 minutes
Objective
Students will compare and contrast daily life activities from the past and present by categorizing and analyzing visual representations.
Materials
- chart paper
- markers
- scissors
- magazines or printed pictures
- tape
- whiteboard
Hook
Show students a picture of children playing with wooden toys 100 years ago and ask them to discuss with a partner what they notice that's different from how they play today.
Main Activity
Working in pairs, students receive mixed pictures showing daily activities from both past and present (cooking, transportation, communication, play, school). Teams sort pictures into 'Then' and 'Now' categories on chart paper, discussing their reasoning with their partner. Each pair creates a comparison poster showing one activity from then and now side by side, drawing connections and differences. Teams present their posters to another pair, explaining what they learned about how that daily activity has changed over time. The class creates a master timeline on the whiteboard showing the evolution of daily life activities.
Discussion Questions
- What surprised you most about how daily life was different in the past?
- Which daily activity do you think has changed the most over time and why?
- What are some things about daily life that have stayed the same?
- How do you think daily life might be different 50 years from now?
- What tools or inventions made the biggest difference in changing daily life?
Exit Ticket
Draw one thing people did differently in the past and write one sentence explaining why you think it changed.
Differentiation
Support: Provide pictures with clear, obvious differences and pair struggling learners with supportive partners who can help explain their thinking.
Extension: Challenge advanced learners to research and add one additional example to each category that wasn't provided in the original pictures.
