Castle Defenders with Rolling Attack Balls

Grade 3 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Indoor

Objective

Develop dodging, throwing accuracy, and teamwork skills through defensive gameplay

Equipment

  • foam balls
  • cones
  • pinnies

Setup

Divide gym into two halves with cones marking center line. Split class into two teams of equal size and give each team different colored pinnies. Each team gets half the gym as their castle territory.

How to Play

  1. Each team starts in their castle territory with equal foam balls scattered on their side.
  2. Players must roll balls across center line to try hitting opponents below the knee to send them to prison (designated corner of opponent's side).
  3. No throwing balls – only rolling along the ground is allowed.
  4. Players can catch rolled balls to avoid being hit.
  5. Tagged players go to prison until a teammate crawls under the center line to rescue them by tagging their hand.
  6. Rescuing players and prisoners get free walk back to their territory.
  7. Game continues for set time periods with teams switching sides.
  8. Team with most players in their territory at end of each round wins that round.

Variations

  • Use only one ball that teams must retrieve after each tag
  • Add safe zones marked by hula hoops where players can rest for 10 seconds
  • Require players to crab walk or bear crawl instead of running

Safety Notes

Emphasize rolling balls only at legs and feet, never at heads or upper body. Keep center line clear of players.

Cool Down

Have all students walk slowly around the gym perimeter while doing gentle arm circles and deep breathing.

Differentiation

Support: Allow less mobile students to be designated ball retrievers or prison guards who can free teammates by high-fiving them

Extension: Challenge advanced students to only use non-dominant hand for rolling or require them to spin in place before rolling
