Writing Personal Memory Stories in Journals

Grade 3 · ELA · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will write a personal narrative about a meaningful memory using descriptive details and proper sequence.

Materials

  • Individual journals or lined paper
  • Pencils
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Chart paper
  • Markers

Hook

Ask students to close their eyes and think of a happy memory from when they were younger. Have them sit quietly for two minutes, remembering all the details they can about that moment.

Main Activity

Students begin by drawing a simple picture of their memory at the top of their journal page. Next, they write their personal story underneath, focusing on what happened first, next, and last. Encourage them to include details about what they saw, heard, or felt during that memory. Students work quietly and independently, taking time to think carefully about their word choices. Teachers circulate quietly, offering gentle encouragement and helping with spelling when needed. Students who finish early can add more illustrations or additional details to their writing.

Discussion Questions

  1. What made this memory special or important to you?
  2. Which details help readers picture your memory most clearly?
  3. How did writing about this memory make you feel?
  4. What was challenging about putting your memory into words?
  5. How can sharing our memories help us learn about each other?

Exit Ticket

Students write one sentence describing how they felt while writing their memory story.

Differentiation

Support: Provide a simple story template with sentence starters like 'First I…' and 'Then I…' for students who need structure support.

Extension: Advanced students can write about how this memory changed them or what they learned from the experience.
