Welcome to the Shape Monster Challenge! Each team will receive a mystery envelope containing shape cards. Your mission is to create the most creative monster using only the shapes you draw.
Main Activity
Teams of 3-4 students receive envelopes containing cards showing different geometric shapes like circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and ovals. Each team must create a monster artwork using at least one of each shape from their cards. Students take turns being the shape drawer, shape cutter, glue master, and decorator. Teams have 25 minutes to complete their monster and prepare a 1-minute presentation explaining which shapes they used. A panel of student judges awards points for creativity, shape identification, and teamwork. The winning team becomes the Shape Monster Champions.
Discussion Questions
- What shapes did you find easiest to work with and why?
- How did your team decide where to place each shape on your monster?
- What other animals or objects could you create using these same shapes?
- How did working as a team help you create better artwork?
- What would happen if you could only use one type of shape?
Exit Ticket
Draw one shape from today's lesson and write its name underneath. Circle the shape you used most in your monster artwork.
Differentiation
Support: Provide pre-cut shapes for students who struggle with cutting skills, offer shape identification cards with visual examples, and pair struggling students with stronger peers in mixed-ability teams.
Extension: Challenge advanced students to create monsters using only triangles or only circles, have them teach shape names to teammates, or ask them to calculate how many total shapes their team used.
