Sorting Community Helpers by Where They Work

Grade K · Social Studies · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will identify and categorize different community helpers by their workplace locations.

Materials

  • Chart paper
  • Markers
  • Small paper squares
  • Tape
  • Whiteboard

Hook

Tell students they are detectives on a mission to help lost community helpers find their way back to work. Show them how you're confused about where a firefighter works – at a school or fire station?

Main Activity

Divide class into teams of 3-4 students. Give each team paper squares with different community helper names written on them (teacher, doctor, police officer, librarian, chef, etc.). Create three large charts labeled 'School', 'Hospital/Clinic', and 'Other Places'. Teams race to discuss where each helper works, then tape their squares onto the correct charts. After all teams finish, review answers together and move any misplaced squares. Teams earn points for correct placements, and everyone wins when all helpers find their workplace homes.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do community helpers work in special places?
  2. What would happen if a doctor tried to work at a fire station?
  3. Which community helpers might work in more than one place?
  4. How do the places where people work help them do their jobs better?
  5. What tools might each helper need at their workplace?

Exit Ticket

Draw one community helper and the place where they work.

Differentiation

Support: Provide picture cards showing both the community helper and their workplace together for visual support.

Extension: Have students think of additional community helpers not mentioned in the activity and determine where those helpers would work.
