Sorting Objects by Heavy and Light Weight
Grade K · Science · 35 minutes
Objective
Students will classify classroom objects as heavy or light by lifting and comparing them.
Materials
- Various classroom objects of different weights
- Two large paper plates
- Markers
- Chart paper
Hook
Tell students that a very confused giant has been trying to pack his suitcase but keeps putting heavy things like elephants next to light things like feathers and now everything is a mess! Ask students to help the giant learn which things are heavy and which are light by testing objects with their muscles.
Main Activity
Students take turns being silly weight testers by dramatically lifting various classroom objects like books, pencils, blocks, and paper while making exaggerated faces and sounds. They pretend to be strong weightlifters saying 'This is SOOO heavy!' or 'This is light as a cloud!' as they place each object on either the 'Heavy' plate or 'Light' plate. After sorting, students walk around the plates like they're judges at a weightlifting competition, checking if they agree with each classification. The teacher encourages funny comparisons like 'This eraser is lighter than a sleeping elephant!' to reinforce the concept while keeping everyone giggling.
Discussion Questions
- What made you decide an object was heavy or light?
- Which object surprised you the most when you lifted it?
- Can you think of something at home that would go on our heavy plate?
- What would happen if we tried to carry all the heavy things at once?
- How do you think the giant feels now that we helped him sort his things?
Exit Ticket
Draw one heavy object and one light object you found today, then show them to a friend.
Differentiation
Support: Pair struggling students with buddies to lift objects together and provide more obvious weight differences like a block versus a feather.
Extension: Challenge advanced learners to order 3-4 objects from lightest to heaviest and explain their reasoning to the class.
