Acting Out Story Events with Silly Dancing Worms

Grade K · ELA · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will sequence story events by acting out the beginning, middle, and end of a simple narrative.

Materials

  • chart paper
  • markers
  • colorful scarves or ribbons
  • whiteboard
  • story picture cards

Hook

Tell students they are going to become wiggly, dancing worms who love to tell stories by wiggling around! Have everyone practice their best worm wiggle dance moves while giggling.

Main Activity

Read a simple three-part story about a worm's adventure (going to find food, getting lost, finding way home). Draw the three main events on chart paper as students watch. Give each student a scarf to be their worm tail and divide class into three groups. Each group becomes responsible for acting out one part of the story – beginning worms, middle worms, or end worms. Groups take turns wiggling and acting out their story part in sequence while making silly worm sounds. Repeat with different students in different groups so everyone experiences each story part. End by having the whole class wiggle through the complete story sequence together.

Discussion Questions

  1. What happened first in our worm story?
  2. How did the middle worms show the problem in the story?
  3. What would happen if we mixed up the story parts?
  4. How did acting like worms help us remember the story?
  5. What other stories could we tell with our worm dances?

Exit Ticket

Draw three pictures showing what happened first, next, and last in today's worm story.

Differentiation

Support: Pair struggling learners with stronger peers during group work and provide visual story cards they can hold while acting.

Extension: Advanced learners can create their own three-part worm story and teach the movements to classmates.
