Making Family Rules for Pet Dinosaurs

Grade K · Social Studies · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will identify and explain why families need rules by creating rules for imaginary pet dinosaurs.

Materials

  • Chart paper
  • Markers
  • Drawing paper
  • Crayons

Hook

Tell students that each family just adopted a baby dinosaur as a pet! Show them how to roar like different dinosaurs and ask what might happen if their new pet dinosaur had no rules at home.

Main Activity

Students work in small groups representing different families with pet dinosaurs. Each group draws their dinosaur family member and brainstorms silly but important rules like 'No stomping during naptime' or 'Only eat vegetables from the garden, not the furniture.' Groups create a poster showing their dinosaur and three family rules with pictures. Each group presents their dinosaur family rules to the class, explaining why each rule helps their family live together peacefully. The teacher records common themes about safety, respect, and taking care of things on chart paper.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think families need rules even if they seem silly?
  2. What would happen if your dinosaur didn't follow the rules?
  3. How are the rules for dinosaur families similar to rules in your real family?
  4. What makes a good family rule?
  5. How do rules help family members feel safe and happy?

Exit Ticket

Draw one rule your real family has and explain why it helps your family.

Differentiation

Support: Provide sentence starters like 'Our dinosaur cannot ___' and 'This rule helps because ___' with picture symbols for key concepts.

Extension: Have students create a rulebook with illustrations showing what happens when dinosaurs follow rules versus when they break rules.
