Reflecting on Daily Life in Ancient Civilizations

Grade 5 · History · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will analyze similarities and differences between daily life in ancient civilizations and modern times through reflective comparison.

Materials

  • paper
  • pencils
  • chart paper
  • markers
  • whiteboard

Hook

Students sit quietly and imagine waking up tomorrow with no electricity, running water, or modern conveniences. They spend two minutes writing about what their morning routine would look like.

Main Activity

Students create a two-column journal comparing their daily life with that of children in ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia, Egypt, or the Indus Valley. They reflect on similarities in basic human needs like food, shelter, family, and play, while noting differences in tools, technology, and customs. After individual reflection time, students share observations in small groups and create a class chart of universal human experiences across time periods. The lesson concludes with quiet individual writing about what they learned regarding human connections across history.

Discussion Questions

  1. What basic human needs have remained the same throughout history?
  2. How do you think children in ancient times spent their free time?
  3. What challenges did families face in ancient civilizations that we still face today?
  4. How might ancient people have solved problems without modern technology?
  5. What can we learn about ourselves by studying how people lived long ago?

Exit Ticket

Write one thing that surprised you about daily life in ancient times and one way ancient people were similar to us today.

Differentiation

Support: Provide sentence starters for journal entries and visual prompts showing daily activities to help students generate ideas for comparison.

Extension: Students research a specific aspect of ancient daily life that interests them and write a detailed diary entry from the perspective of an ancient child.
