Hook

Detective Bear has arrived at our classroom this morning with terrible news! Someone has scattered all the art supplies around the school, and Detective Bear needs young artists to help create detailed drawings of clues to solve this mystery.

Main Activity

Students become detective artists helping Detective Bear by drawing detailed pictures of common classroom objects that serve as clues. Each student receives a mystery object (pencil, scissors, glue stick, etc.) and must create a highly detailed observational drawing showing texture, shape, size, and unique features. Students add detective notes around their drawings describing what they observe, such as 'shiny metal parts' or 'rough textured grip.' The teacher guides students to look closely at shadows, lines, and small details that make each object unique. Finally, students present their clue drawings to help Detective Bear identify where each art supply belongs in the classroom.

Discussion Questions

  1. What small details did you notice about your object that you might have missed before?
  2. How did adding texture and shadows make your drawing look more realistic?
  3. Which part of your object was the most challenging to draw and why?
  4. How do the details in your drawing help Detective Bear solve the mystery?
  5. What drawing techniques helped you show the difference between smooth and rough surfaces?

Exit Ticket

Draw one new detail you learned to notice today and write one sentence about why details matter in art.

Differentiation

Support: Provide students with simple objects with fewer details and offer drawing templates with basic outlines to complete.

Extension: Challenge students to draw their objects from two different angles and add a detailed background showing where the object was discovered.
