Rainbow Parachute Popcorn Adventure
Grade 1 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Indoor
Objective
Students will develop gross motor skills and cooperation through parachute play activities
Equipment
- 1 large parachute
- 20-30 foam balls or bean bags
Setup
Have all students stand around the edges of the parachute, holding it with both hands. Place foam balls or bean bags in the center of the parachute.
How to Play
- Students hold the parachute at waist level and gently shake it to make the balls bounce like popcorn.
- Call out colors and students wearing that color duck under the parachute and pop back up.
- Everyone lifts the parachute high and brings it down to make waves while balls dance on top.
- Play 'merry-go-round' by walking in a circle while holding the parachute.
- Create a 'mushroom' by lifting the parachute high, taking three steps in, then sitting down with the parachute behind them.
- Shake out all the balls, then students take turns crawling under to collect them while others make gentle waves.
- End with everyone sitting in a circle, passing the parachute around like a blanket.
Variations
- Use different colored balls and call out specific colors to shake
- Play gentle music and move the parachute to the rhythm
- Have students make animal sounds while moving around the parachute
Safety Notes
Remind students to hold the parachute gently and watch for friends when moving underneath it.
Cool Down
Have everyone sit in a circle holding the parachute low, taking deep breaths while gently rippling it like calm water.
Differentiation
Support: Allow students who need support to sit in chairs around the parachute or pair them with buddies to help hold their section.
Extension: Challenge advanced students to lead the group in creating new parachute movements or to help count the balls as they bounce.
