Finding the Lost Family Pet Adventure Game

Grade K · Social Studies · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will identify different types of families and family members through a story-based mystery activity.

Materials

  • Chart paper
  • Markers
  • Construction paper
  • Glue sticks
  • Safety scissors

Hook

Tell students that a special family has lost their pet and needs our help to find it! Show them a simple drawing of a sad family on chart paper and explain that we need to learn about all different kinds of families to solve this mystery.

Main Activity

Read aloud the mystery story about different families in the neighborhood who might have seen the missing pet. As you introduce each family (single parent family, grandparent family, large family with many children, small family, etc.), have students draw and cut out paper figures representing each family type. Students work in small groups to create a neighborhood map on chart paper, placing each family's house and discussing what makes each family special. The mystery concludes when students realize the pet was hiding in their own family's garden all along, leading to a discussion about how all families are different but special.

Discussion Questions

  1. What makes each family in our story different from the others?
  2. How is your family similar to or different from the families in our mystery?
  3. What are some things that all families do together?
  4. Why do you think families can look different but still be loving?
  5. What would you tell someone about what makes a family special?

Exit Ticket

Draw a picture of your family and tell me one thing that makes your family special.

Differentiation

Support: Provide pre-cut family figure templates and offer verbal prompts to help students identify family characteristics during discussions.

Extension: Have students create their own mini mystery story about a different family in the neighborhood, including details about family traditions or activities.
