Animal Movement Musical Freeze
Grade 1 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Indoor
Objective
Students will demonstrate body control and practice various locomotor movements through animal mimicry.
Equipment
- Music player
- Animal picture cards
Setup
Clear the gymnasium space of obstacles and have students spread out with arms length apart. Teacher has animal picture cards ready and music controls nearby.
How to Play
When music plays, students move around the gym mimicking the animal shown on the card (bear crawl, bunny hop, crab walk, frog jump, etc.). When music stops, students must freeze in that animal position immediately. Teacher calls out compliments for creative movements and good freezing. After 30-45 seconds, teacher shows a new animal card and starts music again. Students who are caught moving during freeze time do five jumping jacks then rejoin immediately. Game continues with different animals to keep all students moving and engaged throughout.
Variations
- Add animal sounds during movement
- Students suggest new animals to try
- Partner animals where two students move together
Safety Notes
Remind students to watch for others while moving and keep movements controlled to avoid collisions.
Cool Down
Students lie down like sleeping animals and practice deep breathing while teacher dims lights for one minute.
Differentiation
Support: Allow students to modify animal movements to their comfort level or move at their own pace.
Extension: Challenge students to combine two animal movements or add creative variations to basic movements.
