Musical Islands with Team Rescue
Grade 2 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Indoor
Objective
Students will develop spatial awareness, quick decision-making, and teamwork skills while maintaining continuous movement.
Equipment
- Hula hoops
- Music speaker or whistle
Setup
Scatter hula hoops around the gym floor with about 3-4 feet between each hoop. Start with one less hoop than the total number of students. Divide students into two teams wearing different colored pinnies if available.
How to Play
- When music plays, all students jog, skip, or dance around the gym avoiding the hula hoops.
- When music stops, students must quickly find a hula hoop to stand inside – multiple students can share one hoop.
- Any student left without a hoop becomes a 'shark' and must do 5 jumping jacks in the center while others cheer them on.
- After jumping jacks, sharks immediately rejoin the game.
- Remove one hula hoop after each round.
- Teams earn points when they successfully help rescue stranded teammates by making room in their hoops.
- Game continues until only 2-3 hoops remain, then reset with all hoops for a new round.
Variations
- Use different locomotor movements like bear crawls or frog jumps when music plays
- Add team challenges where teammates must link arms before entering hoops
- Create themed movements like swimming motions for ocean theme or flying for space theme
Safety Notes
Remind students to watch for others when moving quickly to hoops and to enter hoops carefully to avoid collisions.
Cool Down
Students sit in remaining hula hoops and practice deep breathing while doing gentle arm circles and shoulder rolls.
Differentiation
Support: Allow less mobile students to be designated as 'hoop helpers' who can guide others to available spaces, ensuring they always have a guaranteed spot.
Extension: Challenge athletic students to help rescue the maximum number of teammates possible, or add movement challenges like hopping on one foot during music.
