Performing Character Emotions to Solve Mystery Plot Problems

Grade 3 · Drama · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will demonstrate understanding of character emotions by using facial expressions, body language, and voice to portray feelings that help solve story mysteries.

Materials

  • index cards
  • markers
  • chart paper
  • whiteboard
  • small paper bags

Hook

Tell students that the school's drama props have mysteriously disappeared and only characters showing the right emotions can find clues to solve the case. Have students practice making surprised faces and worried gestures as if they just discovered the missing props.

Main Activity

Students work in groups of four to solve the mystery of the missing props by acting out different character emotions at key story moments. Each group draws emotion cards from paper bags and must use those specific feelings to perform scenes where characters discover clues around the school. Groups take turns performing their emotional scenes while others guess what feeling is being shown and what clue the character might have found. The teacher writes discovered clues on chart paper, and together the class uses all the performed emotions and clues to solve the mystery story of where the props went.

Discussion Questions

  1. How did changing your facial expression help show your character's emotion?
  2. What body movements made your character's feelings more believable?
  3. How did your character's emotions help other students understand the story?
  4. Which emotions were easiest to show with your whole body?
  5. How did watching other characters' emotions help you understand the mystery better?

Exit Ticket

Draw a picture showing one emotion you performed today and write one sentence explaining how you used your face or body to show that feeling.

Differentiation

Support: Provide emotion cards with pictures showing facial expressions and simple body positions for students who need visual support when performing feelings.

Extension: Challenge students to combine two different emotions in one scene or to show how their character's emotions change from the beginning to the end of finding a clue.
