Group Circle Ball Weaving Challenge

Grade 5 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Indoor

Objective

Students will practice coordination, communication, and teamwork while moving balls around multiple circles simultaneously.

Equipment

  • foam balls
  • cones

Setup

Divide the class into 3-4 groups of 6-8 students each. Each group forms a large circle with students standing about arm's length apart. Place cones to mark each circle's boundary.

How to Play

  1. Each group starts with one foam ball that they must pass around their circle using only underhand tosses.
  2. Once the ball makes one complete lap, add a second ball going in the same direction.
  3. After mastering two balls, groups can attempt three balls simultaneously.
  4. If any ball is dropped, the whole group does five jumping jacks together before resuming.
  5. The challenge is for all groups to successfully keep three balls moving at once for 30 seconds.
  6. Groups must encourage each other and work together – if one group struggles, nearby groups can offer tips and cheer them on.
  7. Once all groups achieve the three-ball goal, try having circles rotate clockwise while continuing to pass balls.

Variations

  • Use different types of balls for each circle
  • Have groups pass balls in opposite directions
  • Allow groups to merge into one giant circle for a final challenge

Safety Notes

Use only soft foam balls and remind students to keep tosses gentle and accurate to avoid collisions.

Cool Down

Have all students sit in one large circle and pass a single ball while sharing one word describing how their team worked together.

Differentiation

Support: Allow struggling students to step closer to their target or use larger, slower-moving balls.

Extension: Challenge advanced students to lead their groups and help coordinate timing between multiple circles.
