Color Island Strategy Tag

Grade 1 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Outdoor

Objective

Develop strategic thinking and spatial awareness while practicing locomotor movements and teamwork

Equipment

  • 4 different colored cones
  • 4 colored pinnies or vests

Setup

Set up four colored cone islands in corners of the play area, each about 15 feet apart. Divide class into four teams and give each team matching colored pinnies. Each team starts at their matching colored island.

How to Play

  1. One team is chosen as taggers and must leave their island to tag other players.
  2. Non-tagging teams can only be safe on islands that match their team color or are currently empty.
  3. Tagged players must freeze in place until a teammate crawls under their legs to free them.
  4. Teams must plan together and decide when to move between islands to avoid taggers.
  5. After 3-4 minutes, rotate which team becomes the taggers.
  6. Teams earn points by having all members reach a different colored island safely together.
  7. Players must walk or skip between islands, no running allowed.

Variations

  • Add a second tagging team for more challenge
  • Require different movements like bear crawling or hopping between islands
  • Make islands smaller by using hula hoops instead of cone areas

Safety Notes

Emphasize controlled movements and looking where they're going when moving between islands.

Cool Down

Have students sit in their team circles and take three deep breaths while sharing one smart strategy their team used.

Differentiation

Support: Allow less confident students to hold hands with a partner when moving between islands and give them extra time to plan moves.

Extension: Challenge advanced students to be team captains who must quietly signal when their team should move to new islands.
