Human Bridge Building Challenge

Grade 8 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Indoor

Objective

Develop teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills through cooperative physical challenges

Equipment

  • Foam balls
  • Cones
  • Pinnies

Setup

Divide class into teams of 4-5 students each. Set up cone markers to create starting and ending zones about 30 feet apart. Give each team different colored pinnies to identify team members.

How to Play

  1. Teams must transport foam balls from the starting zone to the ending zone, but balls cannot touch the ground between zones.
  2. Students form human bridges by linking arms, lying down, or creating tunnels for teammates to pass balls through.
  3. At least three team members must be part of each bridge formation.
  4. If a ball touches the ground, the team starts that ball over from the beginning.
  5. Teams work simultaneously but focus on helping each other succeed rather than racing.
  6. After each successful transport, teams rotate and try different bridge formations.
  7. Goal is for all teams to successfully move all their balls using at least three different bridge methods.

Variations

  • Add more balls per team for increased difficulty
  • Require teams to help other teams when they finish
  • Create obstacles using cones that bridges must go around

Safety Notes

Students should avoid putting weight on each other's backs or joints. Keep bridge formations low to the ground.

Cool Down

Have teams sit in circles and share one positive thing about how another team worked together during the activity.

Differentiation

Support: Allow less mobile students to be anchor points for bridges or ball passers rather than forming the bridge structure

Extension: Challenge athletic students to create more complex bridge formations or lead their teams in developing creative solutions
