Drawing Rock and Mineral Identification Charts

Grade 3 · Science · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will identify and classify different types of rocks and minerals by observing their physical characteristics and creating detailed scientific drawings.

Materials

  • Various rock and mineral samples
  • Magnifying glasses
  • Drawing paper
  • Colored pencils
  • Chart paper
  • Rulers

Hook

Show students a collection of different rocks and minerals and ask them to guess which ones might be found in jewelry, buildings, or tools. Have them touch and examine the samples while sharing their observations aloud.

Main Activity

Students work in small groups to examine rock and mineral samples using magnifying glasses, observing color, texture, hardness, and luster. They create detailed scientific drawings of each sample, labeling key features and writing descriptive words around their illustrations. Groups then collaborate to create a large classification chart on chart paper, organizing their drawings into categories like smooth versus rough, shiny versus dull, and light versus dark colors. Each group presents their chart to the class, explaining how they decided to group their samples and what patterns they noticed.

Discussion Questions

  1. What differences did you notice between the rocks and minerals when you looked closely?
  2. How did using the magnifying glass change what you could see?
  3. Why do you think some rocks are smooth while others are rough?
  4. What clues helped you decide how to group your samples together?
  5. Where do you think you might find these different types of rocks in nature?

Exit Ticket

Draw one rock or mineral from today's lesson and write two words that describe its most important features.

Differentiation

Support: Provide sentence starters for descriptions such as 'This rock feels…' and 'The color is…' and pair struggling students with stronger partners for drawing support.

Extension: Challenge advanced learners to research and add the actual names of rock types to their drawings and create a simple key or legend for their classification system.
