Acting Out Jobs People Did Long Ago
Grade K · History · 45 minutes
Objective
Students will identify and demonstrate different jobs people had in the past through physical movement and role-play.
Materials
- Chart paper
- Markers
- Simple props like scarves and hats
- Timer
- Stickers for scoring
Hook
Tell students they're going to become time travelers who will visit the past and learn about jobs people used to do. Show them how to pretend to churn butter by moving their arms up and down, then have everyone try it together.
Main Activity
Divide the class into teams of 4-5 students. Each team draws a job card showing simple pictures of old-time jobs like blacksmith, baker, farmer, weaver, or water carrier. Teams have 3 minutes to practice acting out their job without speaking while other teams guess. The teacher demonstrates each job first, like hammering for blacksmith or kneading dough for baker. Teams earn points for correct guesses and creative acting. After all teams perform, discuss how these jobs are different from jobs today and why people needed to do them long ago.
Discussion Questions
- What tools did people use long ago that we don't use today?
- Which old-time job looks the hardest to you and why?
- How do people do these same tasks today?
- What job from long ago would you want to try?
- Why did people have to make their own bread and clothes long ago?
Exit Ticket
Draw one job from long ago and one job from today that does the same thing.
Differentiation
Support: Pair struggling learners with confident partners and provide extra visual cues by having the teacher demonstrate each job multiple times before teams practice.
Extension: Have advanced learners create their own job scenarios and teach them to other students, or have them think of tools that would make old-time jobs easier.
