Treasure Island Multi Team Challenge
Grade 7 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Outdoor
Objective
Develop teamwork, strategic thinking, and cardiovascular endurance through cooperative movement challenges
Equipment
- cones
- bean bags
- hula hoops
- foam balls
Setup
Set up four stations in corners of the field using cones to mark boundaries. Place hula hoops as 'treasure islands' in the center with bean bags as treasure. Divide class into four equal teams, each starting at a different corner station.
How to Play
- Each team must collect treasure (bean bags) from the center islands and return them to their home base.
- Players can only carry one treasure at a time and must travel by designated movement (running, skipping, crab walking).
- Defenders with foam balls guard the center – if hit below the waist, treasure carriers must return their treasure and go back to start.
- Defenders rotate every 2 minutes so everyone gets a turn.
- Teams can rescue frozen teammates by high-fiving them.
- After 8 minutes, change the required movement pattern and reset treasure.
- Team with most treasure after three rounds wins, but all teams celebrate together.
Variations
- Add obstacle course elements between base and center
- Require teams to transport treasure in pairs holding hands
- Create alliances where two teams can work together for one round
Safety Notes
Emphasize gentle underhand throws with foam balls aimed only below the waist. Ensure clear boundaries between stations to avoid collisions.
Cool Down
Teams sit in circles and share one positive strategy they used or saw another team use successfully.
Differentiation
Support: Allow students with mobility challenges to be strategic 'coaches' who can call out warnings and directions, or modify their movement requirement to walking
Extension: Advanced students can carry two treasures or complete additional movement challenges like bear crawls through designated zones
