Writing Character Letters Using First Person Voice

Grade 5 · ELA · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will analyze character perspectives and write a personal letter from one character's point of view using first person voice.

Materials

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Whiteboard
  • Chart paper

Hook

Students sit quietly for two minutes and imagine they are their favorite book character. They think about what that character might be feeling right now and what important message they would want to share with someone.

Main Activity

Students choose a character from a book they have read recently and write a personal letter from that character's perspective to another character, family member, or friend. They must use first person voice throughout the letter, expressing the character's thoughts, feelings, and experiences authentically. Students begin by quietly brainstorming the character's personality traits and current situation, then draft their letters focusing on maintaining the character's voice. They reflect on word choice and tone to ensure their writing sounds like the character would actually speak.

Discussion Questions

  1. How did writing from your character's perspective change the way you think about their story?
  2. What challenges did you face when trying to sound like your character?
  3. Which emotions or thoughts were most important for your character to express?
  4. How might your character's letter be different from a letter you would write yourself?
  5. What did you discover about your character that you hadn't noticed before?

Exit Ticket

Write one sentence explaining how your character's voice is different from your own voice when writing.

Differentiation

Support: Provide a simple letter template with sentence starters such as 'I am feeling…' and 'I want you to know…' to help students organize their thoughts.

Extension: Students write a response letter from the recipient's perspective, creating a thoughtful exchange that demonstrates understanding of multiple character voices.
