Acting Out Animals from Different Canadian Regions

Grade 1 · Drama · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will demonstrate understanding of Canadian regional geography by creating and performing animal movements and sounds from different provinces and territories.

Materials

  • Chart paper
  • Markers
  • Whiteboard
  • Construction paper
  • Tape

Hook

Who knows what sound a polar bear makes? What about a moose? Today we're going to become animals that live in different parts of Canada!

Main Activity

Create a simple map of Canada on chart paper showing different regions (Arctic, Prairies, Mountains, Forests, Atlantic coast). Assign each student or small group an animal from a specific Canadian region (polar bears from Nunavut, bison from Alberta, whales from Nova Scotia, mountain goats from British Columbia, moose from Ontario). Students practice moving and making sounds like their assigned animal, then perform for the class while others guess the animal and which part of Canada it comes from. End with a parade where all animals 'travel' across the Canadian map together.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think polar bears live in the North but not in Ontario?
  2. What would happen if a whale tried to live on the Prairies?
  3. How do these animals move differently because of where they live?
  4. Which Canadian animal would you most like to be and why?

Exit Ticket

Draw your favourite Canadian animal and circle which part of Canada it lives in on a simple map.

Differentiation

Support: Pair struggling students with confident peers, provide picture cards showing the animals and their movements, allow students to copy movements rather than create original ones.

Extension: Challenge students to create a short story about their animal's day, perform interactions between animals from the same region, or add facts about what their animal eats.
