Soccer Ball Steal Championship
Grade 5 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Outdoor
Objective
Develop agility, defensive skills, and ball control while maintaining continuous movement
Equipment
- Soccer balls
- Cones
- Pinnies
Setup
Create a large square playing area using cones with boundaries about 40×40 feet. Divide class into two equal teams and give each team different colored pinnies. Place one soccer ball per player scattered throughout the playing area.
How to Play
- Each player starts without a ball and must steal a soccer ball from the field by dribbling it with their feet.
- Once you have a ball, you must keep it moving with your feet while staying inside the boundaries.
- Other players can steal your ball by gaining control of it with their feet – no hands allowed.
- If your ball goes out of bounds, immediately return it to the center and find a new ball to steal.
- Players earn one point for their team for every 10 seconds they maintain control of a ball.
- Teacher calls out points every 10 seconds for players currently controlling balls.
- Game runs in 3-minute rounds with 1-minute breaks between rounds.
- Team with the most points after three rounds wins the championship.
Variations
- Add more balls than players for easier gameplay
- Use only foam balls for younger players
- Create safe zones where players can rest for 5 seconds without being challenged
Safety Notes
Emphasize no body contact – only ball contact allowed. Keep heads up while dribbling to avoid collisions.
Cool Down
Players walk slowly around the perimeter while practicing gentle ball taps and deep breathing.
Differentiation
Support: Allow less skilled players to use hands to carry the ball for short distances or provide larger foam balls that are easier to control
Extension: Challenge advanced players to use only their non-dominant foot or require them to perform a specific skill move before stealing becomes valid
