Building Character Houses Using Story Details

Grade 6 · ELA · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will analyze character traits by constructing physical models and explaining their design choices using textual evidence.

Materials

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Markers
  • Rulers
  • Chart paper

Hook

Students will stand up and walk around the room like different character types – sneaky like a villain, brave like a hero, or nervous like a scared character. After two minutes, they'll sit and discuss what movements they chose and why.

Main Activity

Working in pairs, students select a character from their current reading and design a house that reflects that character's personality traits. They cut and fold construction paper to build a 3D house, decorating it with colors, shapes, and details that represent the character's qualities. For example, a brave character might have a strong, tall house with bright colors, while a secretive character might have a house with hidden doors and dark colors. Students must be able to explain each design choice using specific examples from the text. They write their explanations on chart paper and post them next to their houses.

Discussion Questions

  1. How do the colors and shapes you chose reflect your character's personality?
  2. What specific details from the story influenced your house design?
  3. If your character's personality changed during the story, how would you modify the house?
  4. What does another team's house design tell you about their character that you might not have noticed before?
  5. How can physical objects help us understand abstract concepts like personality traits?

Exit Ticket

Write one sentence explaining the most important design choice you made for your character's house and which specific detail from the text supports that choice.

Differentiation

Support: Provide students with a list of character trait words and corresponding colors or shapes to help them make design connections.

Extension: Students create a neighborhood of houses for multiple characters and write a paragraph explaining how the characters' houses would interact based on their proximity and design.
