Playing Different Roles in Community Emergency Situations

Objective

Students will identify and demonstrate the different roles community helpers play during emergency situations.

Materials

  • Chart paper
  • Markers
  • Index cards
  • Timer
  • Whiteboard

Hook

Tell students the classroom has an imaginary emergency – the pet hamster is missing! Ask them to brainstorm which community helpers might help solve this problem and why.

Main Activity

Divide students into teams representing different community helpers (police, firefighters, doctors, teachers, etc.). Present emergency scenario cards one at a time (lost pet, small fire, someone gets hurt, severe weather). Teams race to explain how their community helper would respond to each emergency. Award points for creative, helpful solutions. After each round, teams can trade roles. Create a class chart showing which helpers work together during different emergencies.

  1. Which community helpers work together most often during emergencies?
  2. What would happen if we didn't have certain community helpers in our town?
  3. How do community helpers communicate with each other during emergencies?
  4. What tools do different community helpers need to do their jobs?
  5. How can regular people help community helpers during emergencies?

Exit Ticket

Draw one community helper and write one sentence about how they help during emergencies.

Differentiation

Support: Provide picture cards showing different community helpers and their tools to support student understanding during role-play activities.

Extension: Have advanced students create their own emergency scenarios and present them to other teams, explaining which community helpers would be needed.
