Creating Rainbow Fish Paintings to Save Ocean Friends
Objective
Students will create colorful fish paintings using basic brush strokes and color mixing techniques.
Materials
- watercolor paints
- paintbrushes
- white paper
- water cups
- paper towels
- crayons
Hook
Tell students that all the colorful fish in Rainbow Reef have lost their beautiful colors and turned completely white! Show them a white fish drawing and explain that only special rainbow painters can help bring back the colors to save the ocean.
Main Activity
Students become ocean rescue artists who must paint colorful fish to restore Rainbow Reef. First, they use crayons to draw simple fish shapes with scales, fins, and eyes. Next, they learn to dip brushes in water, then paint, and practice making dots, lines, and circular motions on scrap paper. Students then paint over their crayon fish drawings, discovering how crayon resists watercolor paint to create magical effects. They experiment with mixing two colors on their paper to create new colors for their fish. Finally, they add extra details like bubbles or seaweed around their fish to complete the underwater rescue scene.
Discussion Questions
- What happened when you painted over the crayon lines?
- Which two colors did you mix together and what new color did they make?
- How do you think your colorful fish will help save Rainbow Reef?
- What other sea creatures could we paint to help our fish friends?
- How did it feel to be an ocean rescue artist today?
Exit Ticket
Have students show their fish painting and name one color they used or one brush stroke technique they learned.
Differentiation
Support: Provide pre-drawn fish outlines for students who need help with drawing shapes, and offer guided hand-over-hand support for brush control.
Extension: Challenge students to paint additional sea creatures or create a coral reef background using different brush techniques like stippling or dragging.
