Designing Book Cover Art with Persuasive Text Elements

Grade 4 · ELA · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will create original book covers that combine visual design with persuasive writing techniques to attract readers.

Materials

  • Construction paper
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Rulers
  • Sample book covers
  • Writing paper
  • Glue sticks

Hook

Show students 3-4 book covers without titles and have them guess which books they think would be most interesting to read based only on the visual design. Discuss what elements made certain covers more appealing.

Main Activity

Students design original book covers for imaginary books they create. They must include a compelling title, author name, back cover summary using persuasive language, and front cover artwork that matches their story concept. Students sketch their layout first, then create the final version using construction paper and art supplies. They write a 3-4 sentence back cover blurb that uses exciting adjectives and action words to convince readers to choose their book. Finally, students present their covers to the class, explaining their design choices and reading their persuasive text aloud.

Discussion Questions

  1. What visual elements make a book cover grab your attention immediately?
  2. How does the back cover summary convince you to read a book?
  3. What persuasive words did you choose and why do you think they work well?
  4. How did you make sure your artwork matched the feeling of your story?
  5. What would happen if the cover art didn't match the story inside?

Exit Ticket

Write one persuasive sentence that would make someone want to read your book, then draw one small symbol that represents your story.

Differentiation

Support: Provide sentence starters for back cover summaries and a list of exciting adjectives and action verbs for students to choose from.

Extension: Have advanced students create additional marketing materials like bookmarks or movie poster versions of their book covers with expanded persuasive text.
