Reflecting on Number Patterns Through Quiet Investigation
Objective
Students will identify and extend number patterns by analyzing sequences and recording their observations in a math journal.
Materials
- Paper or math journals
- Pencils
- Chart paper
- Whiteboard
- Counters or small objects
Hook
Students sit quietly and observe a simple number sequence written on the board (2, 4, 6, 8, ___). They write their thoughts about what they notice in their journals before sharing.
Main Activity
Students work independently to investigate different number patterns displayed around the room, moving quietly from station to station. At each station, they examine a pattern sequence, record what they observe, predict the next numbers, and write about the rule they discovered. After investigating all patterns, students choose one pattern to extend further and reflect on why that particular pattern interested them. They conclude by creating their own original number pattern and writing instructions for a classmate to solve.
Discussion Questions
- What helped you figure out each number pattern?
- Which pattern was most challenging and why?
- How did writing about the patterns help you understand them better?
- What makes a good number pattern?
- How might number patterns appear in everyday life?
Exit Ticket
Write one number pattern you discovered today and explain the rule in your own words.
Differentiation
Support: Provide simple repeating patterns with smaller numbers and visual representations using counters to help students see the pattern physically.
Extension: Challenge students to create multi-step patterns or patterns that combine addition and subtraction rules within the same sequence.
