Retelling Stories Using Picture Sequence Cards

Grade 1 · ELA · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will demonstrate comprehension by retelling a story in correct sequence using picture cards.

Materials

  • blank index cards
  • crayons or markers
  • simple picture book
  • chart paper
  • tape

Hook

Tell students a detective has mixed up all the pictures from their favorite story and they need to help solve the mystery by putting the story back together in the right order.

Main Activity

Read a simple story aloud to students, then have them draw key story events on index cards (beginning, middle, end). Mix up all the cards and place them on the floor. Students work in pairs to become story detectives, finding their cards and arranging them in correct sequence. Each pair then retells their story using their picture cards, explaining what happens first, next, and last. The class listens to see if the story mystery is solved correctly.

Discussion Questions

  1. What clues helped you remember what happened first in the story?
  2. How did the pictures help you remember the story events?
  3. What would happen if we mixed up the order of events?
  4. Which part of the story was most important to include in your pictures?
  5. How does knowing the order help us understand the story better?

Exit Ticket

Draw one picture showing what happened at the very beginning of today's story.

Differentiation

Support: Provide students with pre-drawn picture cards to sequence rather than creating their own drawings.

Extension: Have students create additional picture cards for smaller story details and write one sentence describing each picture.
