Making Partner Collages with Different Textures
Objective
Students will create collaborative artwork by combining various textures and materials with a partner.
Materials
- Construction paper
- Glue sticks
- Cotton balls
- Sandpaper scraps
- Aluminum foil
- Fabric scraps
Hook
Have students close their eyes and feel mystery texture boxes filled with different materials. Ask them to describe what they feel using words like rough, smooth, bumpy, or soft.
Main Activity
Partners work together to create a collage on one large sheet of construction paper. Each pair chooses a simple theme like 'our playground' or 'animals we like' and takes turns adding different textured materials to build their picture. One partner might use cotton balls for clouds while the other uses sandpaper for a rough tree trunk. Partners must discuss and agree on where each texture should go before gluing it down. They continue adding materials until their collaborative artwork tells a complete story.
Discussion Questions
- How did you and your partner decide where to put each texture?
- Which textures felt the most different from each other?
- What was challenging about working together on one artwork?
- How do the different textures make your picture more interesting?
- What would you do differently if you made another texture collage?
Exit Ticket
Draw a quick picture showing your favorite texture from today and write one word that describes how it feels.
Differentiation
Support: Provide pre-cut shapes and give students specific roles like 'texture chooser' and 'glue helper' to make collaboration easier.
Extension: Challenge pairs to create a texture collage that tells a story with a beginning, middle, and end using only textures and no drawn lines.
