Strategic Zone Soccer with Moving Goals
Grade 6 · Gym/PE · 40 minutes · Outdoor
Objective
Students will develop spatial awareness, teamwork, and strategic thinking while improving soccer skills and cardiovascular fitness.
Equipment
- soccer balls
- cones
- pinnies
Setup
Divide the field into three zones using cones – two end zones and one middle neutral zone. Create two teams of 10-15 students each, giving one team pinnies. Each team assigns 2-3 players as 'moving goals' who wear different colored pinnies.
How to Play
- Teams try to score by passing the soccer ball to their moving goal players who must be in the opponent's end zone.
- Moving goal players cannot touch the ball with hands but must trap it with their feet to score a point.
- Moving goals can only stay in end zones for 10 seconds before moving to neutral zone.
- Regular players cannot enter end zones but can pass from neutral zone or their defending zone.
- After each score, moving goal players rotate with field players.
- If ball goes out of bounds, opposite team gets possession with a kick-in.
- No physical contact allowed – if a foul occurs, other team gets free possession.
- Game continues for set time periods with position rotations every 5 minutes.
Variations
- Add multiple soccer balls for faster pace
- Create four zones instead of three for more movement
- Allow moving goals to use hands but must stay stationary for 3 seconds after catching
Safety Notes
Emphasize no sliding tackles or physical contact. Ensure adequate space between zones to prevent collisions.
Cool Down
Students walk the perimeter of the field while discussing what strategies worked best for their team.
Differentiation
Support: Less skilled players can start as moving goals to focus on ball control without pressure, or assign them to specific zones to reduce field coverage.
Extension: Advanced players must complete three passes before attempting to score, or designate them as zone defenders who can enter any zone.
