Territory Defense with Strategic Base Planning
Grade 4 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Outdoor
Objective
Students will develop spatial awareness, teamwork, and strategic thinking while practicing throwing accuracy and defensive positioning.
Equipment
- cones
- foam balls
- pinnies
Setup
Divide the field into four equal territories using cones, creating a large square with clear boundaries. Split the class into four teams of 6-8 players, giving each team different colored pinnies. Each team starts in their assigned territory corner.
How to Play
- Each team must protect their territory while trying to eliminate players from other territories by hitting them below the waist with foam balls.
- Teams have 2 minutes to plan their strategy before the game begins – they must decide who will be defenders, attackers, and ball retrievers.
- Players can only throw balls from inside their own territory, but can venture into neutral center area to collect balls.
- When hit, players must sit in the center area for 30 seconds before returning to their team's territory.
- Teams earn points by having the most active players in their territory when the teacher calls 'freeze' every 3 minutes.
- After each freeze, teams get 1 minute to adjust their strategy before play resumes.
- Game consists of three 7-minute rounds with strategy breaks between each round.
Variations
- Add safe zones within each territory where players cannot be eliminated
- Require teams to complete a group task before players can return from elimination
- Create moving boundaries that shrink the territories every few minutes
Safety Notes
Emphasize gentle throws below the waist only, and ensure players watch for others when moving through the center area to collect balls.
Cool Down
Teams form a circle and take turns sharing one strategy that worked well and one they would try differently next time.
Differentiation
Support: Allow less confident throwers to serve as official ball retrievers who cannot be eliminated, or create smaller safe zones within territories.
Extension: Challenge strong players to use only non-dominant hand for throwing, or assign them as team captains responsible for calling out strategic adjustments during play.
