Drawing Maps to Show How Geography Affects Communities

Grade 4 · Social Studies · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will analyze how physical geography influences where and how communities develop by creating illustrated maps.

Materials

  • Large drawing paper
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Rulers
  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard

Hook

Show students a simple sketch of a river running through mountains and ask them to imagine they are early settlers looking for a place to build a town. Where would they choose and why?

Main Activity

Students create detailed maps showing different geographic features like rivers, mountains, deserts, and coastlines, then draw communities in logical locations based on the geography. They add symbols and drawings to show how people use the land differently in each area, such as farming in river valleys, fishing near coasts, or mining in mountains. Students include a map key explaining their symbols and write brief explanations for why they placed communities in specific locations. Finally, they add illustrations showing how the geography affects daily life, transportation, and work in each community.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think most large cities are built near rivers or oceans?
  2. How would living in the mountains be different from living near a desert?
  3. What geographic features make it easier or harder for communities to trade with each other?
  4. How do people change the land to meet their needs, and how does this affect the environment?
  5. What challenges might a community face if they live in an area with harsh weather or difficult terrain?

Exit Ticket

Draw one geographic feature and write two sentences explaining how it would help or challenge a community living nearby.

Differentiation

Support: Provide students with a partially completed map template that includes basic geographic features, allowing them to focus on placing communities and explaining their choices.

Extension: Have students research and add climate patterns to their maps, then explain how seasonal changes affect the communities they drew throughout the year.
