Adding Numbers to Help Princess Find Lost Crown

Grade 1 · Math · 45 minutes

Objective

Students will solve addition problems with sums up to 10 using concrete objects and visual representations.

Materials

  • Small counting objects like beans or blocks
  • Whiteboard
  • Paper
  • Crayons
  • Chart paper

Hook

Tell students that Princess Luna has lost her magical crown somewhere in the enchanted forest, and she needs their math skills to follow the clues and find it before sunset.

Main Activity

Students work as royal mathematicians solving addition clues left by forest animals who saw the crown. Each clue presents an addition problem using story context like '3 rabbits saw the crown plus 2 more rabbits joined them – how many rabbits total saw the crown?' Students use counting objects to solve each problem, draw pictures to show their thinking, and record number sentences. After solving all addition clues correctly, students discover the crown was hidden under the old oak tree and help Princess Luna retrieve it safely.

Discussion Questions

  1. How did using counting objects help you solve the addition problems?
  2. Which clue was the most challenging to solve and why?
  3. What other ways could we show addition besides using objects and drawings?
  4. If Princess Luna lost something else, what kind of math clues might help us find it?
  5. How do you know when your addition answer is correct?

Exit Ticket

Draw a picture and write a number sentence to solve this problem: Princess Luna found 4 jewels and then found 3 more jewels. How many jewels did she find altogether?

Differentiation

Support: Provide students with addition problems using smaller numbers (sums to 5) and extra counting manipulatives for hands-on support.

Extension: Challenge students to create their own addition story problems about helping other characters in the kingdom and solve problems with sums up to 15.
