Territory Battle with Ball Bombing
Grade 7 · Gym/PE · 40 minutes · Outdoor
Objective
Develop strategic thinking, throwing accuracy, and teamwork while maintaining constant movement and communication
Equipment
- dodgeballs
- foam balls
- cones
- pinnies
Setup
Use cones to divide the field into three equal zones with a neutral middle zone between two team territories. Form two teams of 10-15 players each and give one team pinnies to distinguish them.
How to Play
- Teams start in their home territory with an equal number of balls scattered in the neutral zone.
- Players must run into the neutral zone to collect balls and bring them back to throw at the opposing team's territory markers (cones).
- Players can tag opponents in the neutral zone, sending them back to their home base before they can re-enter.
- Teams earn points by hitting opposing territory cones with thrown balls.
- Players cannot throw balls from inside their home territory – they must advance to the neutral zone or closer to throw.
- Tagged players must run back and touch their home base before rejoining play.
- First team to knock down all opposing territory cones wins the round.
Variations
- Add more balls to increase chaos and action
- Create smaller territories to increase contact and speed
- Allow players to intercept thrown balls to prevent cone hits
Safety Notes
Only throw balls below shoulder height and remind players to watch for others when running to collect balls
Cool Down
Have teams walk the perimeter of the field together while doing arm circles and shoulder stretches
Differentiation
Support: Allow less athletic students to start closer to the neutral zone and assign them as designated cone defenders
Extension: Require athletic students to hit cones from greater distances or assign them as ball retrievers who must collect balls from deep in opposing territory
