Finding Animal Tracks to Solve Missing Pet Mystery
Grade 2 · Science · 45 minutes
Objective
Students will identify and compare different animal tracks to understand how animals move and leave evidence of their presence.
Materials
- Chart paper
- Markers
- Magnifying glasses
- Modeling clay
- Pencils
Hook
Tell students that Mrs. Johnson's pet rabbit Nibbles has escaped from her yard and left tracks in the mud. Show them a mysterious track drawing and ask them to become animal detectives to help solve the case.
Main Activity
Students work in teams to examine different animal track drawings posted around the room, each with clues about the missing rabbit's journey. They use magnifying glasses to observe track details like size, shape, and number of toes. Teams create their own animal tracks by pressing objects into clay to understand how tracks form. They draw their observations on chart paper and follow a trail of clues through different animal tracks including birds, dogs, cats, and finally rabbit tracks. Students compare track patterns to determine which animals Nibbles encountered on his adventure and predict where he might be hiding.
Discussion Questions
- What do animal tracks tell us about how different animals move?
- How can the size and shape of tracks help us identify which animal made them?
- What other signs besides tracks might animals leave behind when they move through an area?
- Why do you think some animals have different shaped feet or paws?
- How do tracks in mud differ from tracks in sand or snow?
Exit Ticket
Draw two different animal tracks and explain one way they are different from each other.
Differentiation
Support: Provide pre-drawn track templates for students to trace and focus on only 2-3 main animal types with very distinct track shapes.
Extension: Have students create their own mystery story using a sequence of different animal tracks and write clues for classmates to solve.
