Naming and Drawing Four Kinds of Lines
About this lesson
Children learn four kinds of lines artists use: straight, zigzag, wavy and curly. They trace each line in the air, then draw them with crayons on scrap paper and match lines to things like mountains and waves. It takes about 10 minutes and needs only scrap paper, crayons and a whiteboard.

Prep
2 min: draw a straight, zigzag, wavy and curly line on the whiteboard
Materials
- whiteboard and marker
- scrap paper
- crayons
Steps
- Point to each line on the board and say its name (straight, zigzag, wavy, curly). Have children say the name and trace the line in the air with one finger.
- Give each child a sheet of scrap paper and one crayon. Call out a line name and have them draw that line across their paper, then switch crayon colours for the next one.
- Say a picture word and ask children to draw the line it reminds them of: road (straight), mountains (zigzag), ocean waves (wavy), snail shell (curly).
- Have children turn to a partner, point to each line on their paper and say its name out loud.
Quick Check
Point to a random line on the board and have the class call out its name while tracing it in the air.
Differentiation
Make it easier: Practise only straight and wavy lines, and draw each one together slowly on the board first.
Make it harder: Ask children to fill their whole paper with a picture made only from the four kinds of lines.
