Bean Bag Bridge Builders Team Challenge

Grade 2 · Gym/PE · 35 minutes · Indoor

Objective

Develop teamwork, balance, and coordination through collaborative movement activities

Equipment

  • Bean bags
  • Cones
  • Hula hoops

Setup

Place cones around the gym to create 4-5 stations with hula hoops as target zones. Divide class into teams of 4-6 students and give each team a set of bean bags.

How to Play

  1. Teams must transport all their bean bags from their starting cone to the target hula hoop without using hands.
  2. Students can balance bean bags on heads, shoulders, backs, or between knees while walking.
  3. If a bean bag falls, the whole team must freeze and do 5 jumping jacks together before continuing.
  4. Teams can help each other by creating human bridges or tunnels for teammates to crawl under while carrying bean bags.
  5. Once all bean bags reach the target, teams rotate to the next station.
  6. The goal is for all teams to successfully complete every station together.
  7. Teams cheer for each other and can offer helpful tips between rounds.

Variations

  • Add music and students must move to the beat
  • Create obstacles using mats that teams must go around
  • Allow teams to choose different body parts for carrying at each station

Safety Notes

Remind students to walk carefully when balancing objects and to be gentle when creating human bridges or tunnels.

Cool Down

Have students sit in a circle and practice deep breathing while gently tossing bean bags to each other.

Differentiation

Support: Allow struggling students to use easier carrying methods like holding bean bags against their chest, and assign them as team encouragers and strategy helpers.

Extension: Challenge advanced students to carry multiple bean bags at once or to help create more complex human bridge formations for their teammates.
